Trieste’s long-lasting theatre tradition provides a great choice of cultural events, ranging from opera to drama performances; the perfect entertainment for an evening in the city.

In particular, on request, we can organise an evening at the Giuseppe Verdi Lyric Theatre, known as the “little Scala”, to assist to one of the many interesting opera and ballet performances, with a programme that varies every year.

This walk across Trieste’s city centre is an opportunity to experience the atmosphere that inspired some of the greatest Italian and European writers and visit the favourite places of those who lived in Trieste such as Saba, Svevo and Joyce.

The itinerary starts in Piazza Unità d’Italia and continues across the narrow streets of Cittavecchia, a favourite with both Italo Svevo, who enjoyed walking in the neighbourhood every day, and Joyce, who perfectly recreated its varied and frenetic atmosphere in his works. At number 4 of Piazza Hortis, we find the Civic Library, which Italo Svevo and James Joyce visited regularly. In Cittavecchia we will also visit the Svevo and Joyce Museums that host many great, small treasures.

Walking back to Piazza Unità, we will reach Piazza Verdi.

Here, opposite the Verdi Theatre where Joyce often enjoyed opera performances, once were the offices of the Union Bank, where Svevo worked for 18 years; in fact, his first novel, Una Vita (A Life), was about the life of a bank clerk.

The itinerary continues along Via San Nicolò. At number 30, the Antique Bookshop “Umberto Saba” once was managed by the Italian poet and its shelves still house precious books. The building at number 32 once was the Berlitz School, where Joyce taught English for many years and where the friendship between the Irish writer and Italo Svevo started. Not far from the school, in Via Dante 14, Caffè Stella Polare is one of Trieste’s historic cafés, which became the two writers’ favourite meeting place.

Continuing along Viale XX Settembre, the building at number 16 is the birthplace of Ettore Schmitz, who later will be better known as Italo Svevo. Antico Caffè San Marco, on the parallel street, via Battisti, is another historic café and a traditional meeting place of writers and intellectuals.

This is where our walk ends and where you can enjoy a traditional cake accompanied by a good cup of coffee.

The itinerary includes the most significant places in Trieste’s history between 1943 and 1954.

The tour starts on the shores where on 3 November 1918 the Italian infantry landed at the end of the Resurgence period; it continues along the coastal elevated road, till it reaches the National Monument Risiera di San Sabba, the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy, which dates back to the period between 8 September 1943 and 1 May 1945, when Trieste was separated from Italy and became a province of the Third Reich.

From Risiera di San Sabba, the tour moves to the Foiba of Basovizza (National Monument), where thousands of people were killed during the 40 days of Yugoslavian occupation (between 1 May and 12 June 1945).

If the weather allows it, from Basovizza one can admire the beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste and the Slovenian side of the Istrian peninsula and part of the border between Italy and Slovenia, recently “abolished” when Slovenia became part of the Schengen Area.

From the Foiba of Basovizza, back down to Trieste, passing in front of Rittmayer Palace, where, in 1944, 51 Italian citizens where hung by the German occupation army after an act of reprisal.

The tour then reaches Piazza Sant’Antonio, where in November 1953 the police of the Allied Military Government shot protesting crowds killing 6 people.

From Piazza S. Antonio to Piazza Unità d’Italia, where on 26 October 1954 troops of the Italian Army entered the city for the second and last time.

The itinerary starts at the Memorial of Redipuglia, where an expert of the Great War will provide historical context; the visit continues at the Museum and then returns back to the Memorial.

The Memorial of Redipuglia, built in 1938, is the largest military memorial in Italy; it accommodates the remains of 100.000 soldiers who fell in battle during the First World War and is also the resting place of the Duke of Aosta, Commander of the Third Army.

From Redipuglia, the tour moves to Mount San Michele, a strategic post for the Austro-Hungarian defence. If the weather allows it, the tour can include a visit to some of the trenches on the Karst and the memorial stones of fallen soldiers.

After visiting the museum, we will reach San Martino del Carso, mentioned by poet Giuseppe Ungaretti in one of his poems, where the Italians repeatedly engaged with Austrian troupes.

this ravaged village
is my heart”

In this area, the Austrian army used gas against Italian soldiers and to remember the event, a statue of the “Madonna delle Lacrime (Our Lady of Tears)” has been placed in an aedicule at the village crossroads.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, the tour continues in Gorizia, to visit the Castle and the Great War Museum, where a modern exhibition effectively and comprehensively represents the events of the conflict and its human and social repercussions.
Before heading back, you will have some time to spend in Gorizia.

The Karst Plateau is a very suggestive landscape made of hills and valleys, where white stone villages break the monotony of the green vegetation. The Gemina trail connects the villages of Malchina and Ternova, cutting through San Pelagio and Prepotto. The trail is a great way to experience and find out more about the Karst Plateau, where artisan activities thrive in the shade of its houses and trees.

The Gemina trail is only one of many trails that cross the plateau. For example, the renowned Rilke Trail is a natural terrace nearly 2 km long that overlooks the white cliffs of Duino, which drop sharply into the sea. A walk with deep historical, cultural and literary roots.
The Rilke Trail is one of the Karst Plateau’s most fascinating and easy-to-reach itineraries. This is where poet Rainer Maria Rilke enjoyed walking when he was a guest of the Princes della Torre e Tasso. The charm of this corner of the world is forever sealed in the “Duino Elegies”, which describe the beauty of the white cliffs that drop sharply in the sea.

Another particularly fascinating place is the area of the Timavo Resurgence. Here you will discover the history of this hidden river whose source, in Slovenia, created the Škocjan Caves. The river runs under ground for kilometres and kilometres until it resurfaces among a group of willows in San Giovanni di Duino.
A phenomenon typical of this plateau, which has fascinated many poets and travellers of the past.

Not to mention the Napoleonic panoramic road that connects Opicina to Prosecco, from where you can admire the entire city and, why not, try to climb the natural rock wall!

In Val Rosandra, you can explore the Natural Reserve, stay in the lowest mountain hut in Italy and visit the salmon fishery in Bagnoli della Rosandra.

If you like, you may include a meal at one of Karst’s agritourism restaurants, or at the tourism fishery of the Villaggio del Pescatore (Fisherman’s Village) nearby.

Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), on Trieste’s Karst Plateau, is the largest tourist cave in the world, an enchanting place in which nature, scientific research and tourism come together.

From the village of Borgo Grotta Gigante an easy and safe path leads down to the cave. The enormous cavern could host the entire Basilica of Saint Peter. Once inside, you will taste typical Karst wines and local products. A chance to taste wine 100 metres below the surface of the Earth!

The temperature in the cave is 11°C; we recommend dressing appropriately and wearing suitable shoes.
After the visit, lunch at a well-known agritourism that offers traditional local dishes.
After lunch, you will have the chance to visit the workshop of a local sculptor who creates unique works of art from Karstic rock.
