Cross-border Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia
Between Italy and Slovenia, in the centre of the New Europe
Border regions experience every day the influences of different cultures and traditions. Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the centre of the New Europe, is a unique territory, ideally without borders: you will find yourself in Italy and in Slovenia, discover new places and learn new things and whether or not you will cross the border, it will make no difference.
3 days/2 nights
Arrival in Aquileia and meet with the guide of one of the most important archaeological sites of Northern Italy. Visit of the ruins and the Basilica with the mosaic floor. Transfer back to Trieste. Along the way, stop at the Redipuglia Memorial, the largest military memorial in Italy, built in honour of the soldiers who fell in battle during the First World War. Arrival in Trieste and check in at the hotel. Dinner at the restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast. Meet with the guide for a walking tour of the city centre. Visit of: the Borgo Teresiano area and the Serbian and Greek Orthodox churches; Piazza Unità d’Italia, the largest square in Italy that opens directly onto the sea; the Roman Theatre; the old part of city and the old Jewish ghetto. Lunch at a restaurant. At 3 PM, transfer by private bus to Postojna for a guided tour of the spectacular caves. The first part of the visit will take place on board an electric train. After the visit, back to Trieste. Dinner at a historical traditional restaurant. Overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast. Meet with the guide and transfer by private bus to visit Risiera di San Sabba, sadly renowned for being the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy. Back on the bus and transfer to Miramare Castle. Built in the mid-19th century at the bidding of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, as a home for himself and his wife Charlotte of Belgium, it is a unique example of aristocratic luxury, which still preserves its original furnishings. Guided tour of the Castle and lunch at a restaurant nearby. Journey back.
