Friuli Venezia Giulia
a journey across history from Ancient Rome to the present day
A journey to discover Aquileia, Palmanova, Trieste and Redipuglia, focusing on Ancient Rome, Venetian domination and the First and Second World War.
3 days/2 nights
Early morning transfer by private bus to Palmanova “city-fortress”, masterpiece of Venetian military architecture, with its characteristic nine-pointed star shape. Visit and packed lunch brought from home.
In the afternoon, transfer to Aquileia, meet with the guide and visit of the site. Founded in 181 BC under Caesar Augustus, it became one of the richest cities of the Roman Empire and was known as the “second Rome”. Excavations have brought to light the ruins of the Roman forum, a basilica, a burial ground, mosaic floors and foundations of houses, statues of the Via Sacra, markets, walls, of the river port, of a large mausoleum and a lot more.
Transfer to Grado, arrival and check in at a 3* hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Breakfast. Transfer to Trieste and guided tour of Risiera di San Sabba, the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy.
Followed by a visit of the city and San Giusto Hill, with the Cathedral, the Roman Forum and the outside of the Castle. On the way down, you will walk past the Roman Theatre.
The next stop will be Kleine Berlin, an air-raid shelter: a public tunnel used by civilians as a refuge during air strikes and a German military air-raid shelter, comprising a main tunnel and lateral branches.
From Kleine Berlin to Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), which features in the Guinness Book of Records as the “tourist cave with the largest chamber in the world”. A symbol of the Karstic underground territory. Back to the hotel in Grado. Dinner and overnight.
Breakfast. Check-out and transfer by bus to Miramare Castle, luxury aristocratic residence built at the bidding of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg in the mid 1800s. From Miramare Castle, transfer to the Redipuglia Memorial. This is where 100,187 soldiers who fell in battle during the First World War are buried: 39,857 known and 60,330 unknown.
