Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia
A small region rich with history awaits you
From Ancient Rome to the Lombards; from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the present day. Castles, abbeys, multiculturalism and excellent wine-growing areas are some of the reasons why Lonely Planet included Trieste in its Best in Travel 2016 list of destinations!
5 days/4 nights
Arrival in Trieste and meet with the guide to visit the Miramare Castle, historical residence of Maximilian of Habsburg; guided tour of the Castle and the surrounding Park. After the visit, back to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight at hotel.
Breakfast. Transfer by private bus to the Grotta Gigante (Giant Cave), considered the largest tourist cave in the world, included in the Guinness Book of Records since 1995. The visit consists in a walk inside the cave down 500 steps – and up 500 steps on the way out! After the visit, lunch at a renowned local winery with local products and wines and visit of the cellar. Back to the city centre and guided tour of the Borgo Teresiano area, the Serbian and Greek Orthodox churches, the Church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo and the beautiful Piazza Unità d’Italia. In the afternoon, stop at a traditional buffet to taste “our” ham baked in bread crust, which can only be found here in Trieste! Dinner. Overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast. Transfer by private bus to the Collio Goriziano area. Visit of Corno di Rosazzo Abbey. The origins of the over-one-thousand-year-old abbey are still not fully known. Thanks to its geographical location, over the centuries the abbey has been a crossroads between east and west, a place where different cultures meet and communicate. After the visit, transfer by bus to Cividale del Friuli, an historical town with clear Lombard influences; lunch and visit of the town. In the afternoon, on the way back to Trieste, stop at the Castelvecchio winery to visit the cellars and taste the wine. Arrival in Trieste in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Breakfast. Meet with the guide to continue the visit. Morning dedicated to discovering the multicultural side of the city. You can visit the Synagogue, the Serbian and Greek Orthodox churches and the Catholic church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo. Lunch at leisure. In the afternoon, we suggest a visit to the Venetian-style town of Muggia, which can be reached on board the Delfino Verde Motorboat. Muggia is famous for its medieval Castle, currently the residence of the Bossi family, who have brought the building back to its original splendour. With a little luck, the owner herself will show you around, tell you stories and anecdotes about the castle and offer you an aperitif. Back to Trieste on board the Delfino Verde Motorboat. Dinner. Overnight at hotel.
Breakfast. Return journey by bus. On the way, stop in Aquileia one of the most important archaeological sites in Northern Italy; guided tour of the ruins and the Basilica with the mosaic floor. Lunch at leisure. Departure.
